Catalonia / Northern Spain

The coastal zone of the Costa Brava begins 4kms North of Barcelona and extends to the French border. It is well known for its beaches and resorts, with a scenic and rugged coastline: a succession of coves, cliffs, and mountaintop lookouts dotted along.

Some of its areas have been massively dedicated to tourism, but others, such as Tossa de Mar, still retain their original size and fishing village charm.Other picturesque towns and villages can be foundall along the Costa Brava, as well as the Greek and Roman ruins of Empśries. The riverside town of Girona (Gerona in Spanish) features an 13th-century cathedral, an old Jewish quarter, and museums. The Salvador Dalķ Museum is a must for lovers of surrealism.

Away from the sea, you arrive to the mountain ranges of Montseny, Montnegre and, specially remarkable, Montserrat,  the mythic "Holy Mountain", with its Romanesque Monastery de la Vierge de Montserrat, famous place of pilgrimage. Its beauty and peace are overwhelming.

Catalonia map

detailed map of the Costa Brava

In Catalonia there is a wide variety of landscapes and climates, ranging from the Pyrenean peaks, snow-covered in winter, to the Mediterranean-bathed coastline, with its pleasant, mild climate. This is a diverse region made up of "comarques", which are tiny areas, each with its own personality, which is why there is such a feeling of diversity and contrast.

La Costa Brava is the coast of the Geronese districts of La Selva, Baix Empordą and Alt Empordą.For centuries the Costa Brava was a mysteriously beautiful coast, with its sheltered coves and little village of seafarers and fisher folk.
